The first-generation RAV4 was originally based on the Corolla platform and came with a 120-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and front-or all-wheel-drive configurations. In 1998, the RAV4 was slightly re-designed the front and rear bumpers and a soft-top two-door was made available in some markets. The second generation RAV4 arrived in time for the year 2001 model year and grabbed a stronger 148 hp 2.0-liter engine. A facelift was done for the 2004 model year, was mainly from the new bumper design, and the 2.0-liter engine upgraded to a 161-hp 2.4-liter four-cylinder mill.
The Toyota RAV4 was then updated for the 2006 model year, this time given a completely new platform and the choice of four-and six-cylinder engines. No significant changes since then, with the exception of the introduction of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine as the basis for model year 2009, along with some minor changes styling. This means that the 2010 Toyota RAV4 with the base 179-hp 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine or the top 269-hp 3.5-liter V-specification-6. A manual option is not offered on the RAV4 does, so instead of the four-cylinder model is one of a four-speed automatic, while the V-6 model gets a five-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway for the four-cylinder model and 22 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway for the V-6.
At the Geneva Motor Show 2010 Toyota RAV4 was slightly refreshed, which is expected to come to market later this year as a 2011 model. Modifications to the vehicle were limited slight changes to the headlights and bumpers.
