The 2007 Ford Shelby GT500 Convertible on one of the most anticipated and powerful cars in 2006 and got hotter with the announcement that a convertible version of the Ford lineup to add. With 475 horsepower on tap from the supercharged 5.4L V-8 engine, the Ford Shelby GT500 Convertible most powerful factory built Mustang convertible in history.
Carroll Shelby, the legend behind the original Shelby Mustangs, is the Ford SVT engineering team early in the program for the stamp of approval on the convertible version and had nothing but praise for the effort.
“Convertibles often go against the pursuit of high-performance, but not this GT500,” said Shelby. “The Ford Shelby GT500 convertible can go against the best of them and hold their own. It is stiff, it’s fast, and I’m looking forward to my cruise up and down the streets of Texas.”
Driving enthusiasts know all too well that the greatly increased weight and reduced structural integrity of some drop tops over their hard top derivatives sometimes force automakers to limit the performance. It is often a matter of detuned engine or a soft suspension – that one must, for reasons of driveability and durability in convertible models suffer.
The good news is that the same 500 hp V-8 engine powers the Ford Shelby GT500 coupe and convertible. And reduce the convertible bond more weight to a minimum, fewer suspension modifications needed, which means that you will be dealing in a convertible driving experience much closer to the coupe than ever before.
There, where the convertible would be the most strength and how commonality with the coupe was in the base of the cars are built, engineers added strength in both models by designing body joints and rocker panel, for example, which help solidify the convertible without excessive bracing.
As a result of the Shelby GT500 convertible is less than 125 pounds heavier than the coupe. This allows engineers to use the same suspension geometry, with chassis modifications only slightly softer springs, dampers and stabilizers-tune that fit the convertible limited character.
Exclusive Top Cloth improved appearance and performance:
The Shelby GT500 convertible features a unique cloth convertible top, replacing the vinyl top of the Mustang GT convertible. The GT500 will be only the second Mustang to be a cloth over its function, first introduced on the 2003 SVT Mustang Cobra.
The cloth is similar to high-end implementation, exotic sports car, an elegant visual upgrade to the GT500 convertible. In addition, the thicker fabric is not only more durable than vinyl, but creates a much stronger top results in a very quiet interior while driving on the tip.
For top-down driving, Mustang convertible floating “five-bow power top with z-fold design folds beautifully into the boat, which a more complete, clean, top-down phenomenon.
The Snake is back – Legendary looks with SVT Shelby GT500 convertible combines the function of the dramatic design genes of the all-new Mustang expands with legendary performance Carroll Shelby Mustang SVT the image to a design approach and appeal of brand power to create.
“The restrained, performance-oriented SVT design theme is instantly recognizable to enthusiasts are,” said Doug Gaffka, design director, Ford SVT. “The GT500 is a giant leap forward in combining the modern Mustang muscle car to expand with the classic Shelby performance look SVT reach a much larger audience.”
While the GT500 coupe facade is characterized by the classic Shelby LeMans-style stripes that race along the car from nose to tail, the convertible is only with the subtle stripes on the side rocker reading “GT500″.
Continuation of the snake logo tradition of previous SVT Mustang Cobra and late-model Shelby Mustangs, the fenders each feature an updated design of the Cobra. For the first time at an SVT Mustang, the front grille features an off-center snake in place of the standard running horse. “GT500″ is emblazoned on the side rocker stripes, and the name “Shelby” is prominently featured in the stern. The SVT logo can be seen on the wheel hub caps, a signature SVT location, as well as on the doorsill plates. To top off the “gas cap” medallion between the taillights, “Shelby GT500″ reads centered on the Cobra image.
