Easier still wider, faster but more economical, more luxury inside and out really clearly a Porsche. There is a lot about the second generation of the Cayenne as. But not the gasoline-burning engine under the hood of the $ 46,700 base model, which goes on sale this fall.

This 3.6-liter V-6, an updated version of the engine in the 2007 mid-life facelift of the Cayenne has introduced the first generation. It is a member of a long life, the Volkswagen Group’s narrow-angle vee-engine family. Developed in the late 1980s, it first appeared in Europe (in the VW Passat) in 1991 and has continuously developed over two decades, including in the middle of this decade, the adoption of the first October 6th grade instead of the previous 15 degrees between cylinder banks.

On paper, the engine looks in the least expensive version of the new Cayenne in order. Check the maximum performance, and you will see the number 295 both times. But while the power and torque figures are very competitive, it is revealed that the engine is not refined.

Idle is not as smooth as it should be. Then, around 3000 rpm there is a period of tingling vibrations. And the last 1000 rpm before redline not a pleasant thing to hear. To blunt the engine of the Porsche has raised short standards.

Exactly how high those standards are of the 3.6-liter is illustrated by Porsche designed for the new V-6 version of the Panamera. The European launch of the Cayenne and Panamera V-6 was performed on consecutive days, the streets around Cologne, Germany. Drive one, then the next day was the other doctrine, to say the least.

Porsche’s engine is smoother and offers more sonic quality. The Panamera V-6 feels answer is smart, although some credit is certainly due to his athletic seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox – Porsche-in Lexicon PDK – Gear. VW source is the Cayenne V-6 with a not-quite-so-sporting conventional torque converter. Made by the Japanese company Aisin, it is nevertheless a fine transmission. He deserves to be screwed on an improved engine.

To explain the Aisin two features significantly improved fuel efficiency of the second generation Cayenne is. In the standard European consumption test used the V-6 version of about 20 percent less gas than before. A similar improvement is expected by the engineers at Porsche EPA certification is completed. Other fuel-saving strategies include an Auto Start Stop system, and a series of friction reduction and thermal management modes for gasoline direct injection. In short, the expected most of the technology in a newly developed engine. As such, the Panamera’s V-6.

So why not the superior V-6 used in the second generation Cayenne? admit, in fact, Porsche engineers, that it can fit easily. The answer lies in developing a long-standing negotiations with Volkswagen to the first generation Cayenne. The program was Porsche’s first SUV will be delivered, plus the tour for VW, Audi and the Q7. Porsche wanted a V-6 and the VW group was ready to make a delivery. But the deal completed, Porsche had to commit to the use of purchased motor for two complete cycles model.

Meanwhile, the Panamera. The realization of the long, narrow-angle Volkswagen engine is not under the low hood of the big four-seater GT, Porsche developed the solution: an engine that can on the same lines of machine tools at its Zuffenhausen engine produced, and put a clever compact four-wheel drive system.

With this powertrain the second generation Cayenne V-6 with all its other improvements, a beautifully polished SUV was. As the situation stands, have clients who can not afford a Cayenne, but the V-8 (or hybrid) price tag will now have two options. Wait six to seven years for the next all-new model. Porsche Cars North America or import pressure on the turbo-diesel V-6 version on sale in Europe. With this modern engine of the VW Group’s new Cayenne, the gasoline V-6-game performance while burning much less fuel and does everything with a Porsche sound Polish.
