The 2011 BMW 5 Series Touring is very similar to the new 2011 5 Series sedan, but with a flat, car-like rear roofline grafted onto the B-pillars. It is a predictable look, certainly, but BMW has it then cut with a matte aluminum-look at the window and roof rail (both glossy and matte black finish for the last are optional).

If looks alone will not sell, tourism might increase the cargo space. BMW says about 19.4 cubic meters of cargo space with the rear seats, two more blocks than the previous model and about five more than the Gran Turismo. If the rear seat backs in an upright (they lean back more than 11 degrees) BMW owners say sit an extra cubic feet of storage, while three more passengers.

Mechanically, the Touring is almost identical to its sedan brother. Four-wheel active steering – a highlight of the new 5-series – is on the wagon, when a new air-leveling suspension on the rear axle. Powertrain offerings are identical to the Euro-spec sedan too. 2.0-liter turbo diesel from BMW I-4 is found in the entry-level 520d, while the higher-spec, 245 hp 530d pushes the car to 62 mph in a more than respectable 6.4 seconds. The now famous N55 turbocharged 3.0-liter I-6 powers the top-of-the-line 535i, and pushes the car to 62 mph in six seconds flat, according to the automaker. A naturally aspirated, 204 hp version of the 3.0-liter I-6 is used as the base gas engine.

A six-speed manual transmission is standard, while the new BMW-source-eight-speed ZF automatic transmission is optional on all models. All models come with a manual gearshift indicator, provided the efficiency of support, and the 5-Series Touring also comes with a few of the latest BMW EfficientDynamics technologies. The BMW 520d, for example, 1 May-series BMW version of start-stop technology to come.

Although it will reach European dealers in September, do not expect the 5 Series Touring in the U.S. in the foreseeable future. Until now, the 5 car is not part of the automaker in North America, product plans, and America is getting less than fond feelings for real cars.
